Here is a diagram of the diaphragm.
Notice that it is shaped a little like a parachute when it is completely stationary. It connects all the way around the lowest rib of the rib cage and lowers to allow air to fill the lungs. By using the diaphragm effectively, we can utelize the breath energy we need to be able to sing well.
